Australia is known as a land of droughts and flooding rains, a cycle largely driven by the “ocean modes” ENSO (El Nino/La Nina and the Southern Oscillation), and the Indian Ocean Dipole. These are examples of Climate Variability, and are the key drivers of our seasonal climate. However, Climate Change is pushing both to more extreme conditions. To understand what is happening in Australia, and in particular what drove some of our worst fires and floods, we need to understand both.

DELIVERY MODE

  • Face-to-Face

COURSE OUTLINE

  • The general circulation of the atmosphere; weather and climate
  • El Nino, La Nino, and the Southern Oscillation
  • The Indian Ocean Dipole
  • Other modes of variability, and their impacts: the Climate Dogs
  • The 2019-2020 bushfires
  • The 2022 floods
  • The summer of 2023-2024

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the key role of Climate Variability in Australia’s weather extremes
