Filled with scorching hot days, late sunsets and the smell of sunscreen, an Australian Summer coincides with Christmas and New Year festivities, as well as sees scores of people pack up their suitcases and travel either interstate or overseas for a much-anticipated vacation. It’s a season filled with events, bursts of inspiration and a desire to channel experience into words, either as a means of keeping the memory alive for future reading or as a way of sharing meaningful moments with loved ones. Discover how to unleash your inner creative voice and translate those Summer memories into a well-written story.

  • Face-to-Face

  • The Summer season as a source of inspiration for creative prose (e.g. fiction and creative non-fiction)
  • Looking at the different genres of creative writing and how to navigate/challenge their rules and conventions
  • Weekly speed writing exercises and prompts to break the initial writer’s block and stimulate thought flow
  • Using the ‘show, don’t tell’ technique to make scenes more descriptive, authentic and engaging
  • Understanding narrative structure and narrative voice, including what they are, how to use them and why they are important
  • Writing convincing characters with personality and depth
  • Providing and receiving feedback at all stages of writing, as well as sharing work with peers and the tutor on a regular basis
