This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the death of Joseph Conrad. In his early life, Conrad spent a period as the First Mate on a trading ship that sailed regularly from Singapore to East Borneo. During this period he met the unusual characters who populate his first novels – Almayer’s Folly, The Outcast of the Islands, Lord Jim and The Rescue. Explore these novels and how Conrad made the transition from Master Mariner to one of the world’s greatest writers in the English language, when English was not even his first language.
