Whether you've been writing creatively for most of your life, have dabbled in the craft from time to time or are simply curious and have yet to make that leap into the realms of creative writing, this taster course will have something for everyone. Students will have the chance to sample a range of creative writing techniques and exercises that are not only useful for beating writer’s block, but which also assist in the drafting and editing processes.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Using speed writing as a tool for writer’s block and fleshing out a first draft
  • Using visual and written prompts to stimulate thought flow
  • Understanding the importance of editing and proofreading, as well as being kind, fair, helpful and constructive in the feedback given to one’s own writing

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Use speed writing, as well as visual and written prompts, as tools to negotiate writer’s block and fleshing out first drafts
  2. Deliver fair, helpful and constructive feedback when proofreading and editing their own work
