Available Classes

This course offers practical tips to write poetry and to finesse and finish existing poems. We will review key poetic structures and techniques, and then apply them to your own poems. Each week, there will be creative prompts to inspire your own writing, so that you gain a sense of momentum in your writing practice. No writing experience is necessary, however existing writers and poets will also gain valuable tips for deepening their poetry writing.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Overview of the poetic form and the various types of poems that have emerged, especially in the modern era
  • Explore poetic structure and how different structures drive the poem’s impact
  • Illustrate techniques of poetry writing craft through analysis of impactful poems
  • Experiment with structures to drive your own poems
  • Apply techniques to your own poems
  • Creative prompts in each lesson to ensure students are writing new poems and/or finessing existing poems
  • Opportunity to present any poems in the final lesson (optional)

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. More fully appreciate the poetry writing craft and the artistry involved
  2. Gain confidence to begin writing a poem and/or finish poems
  3. Use several different techniques to inspire poetry writing and/or help complete any existing poems
  4. Apply practical tips and creative prompts to their own poetry writing
