The Battle of Kursk, between the USSR and Germany in 1943, changed the course of modern history. It was a battle of attrition between the two powers, forcing tens of thousands of tanks and artillery pieces, millions of soldiers to slog it out on the plains of Ukraine. The winner would win the battle of the East and go on to win the Battle of Europe. We look at the importance of this battle, and the manner in which it was fought. We also look at the experience of the average soldier and discuss why it has not featured in the consciousness of average "Westerners".
