To honour 125 years since Australia became a nation let’s investigate the people who made it happen, how it all evolved, and whether the process was a success. Among the issues that needed to be resolved was immigration restriction, trade policy and women’s participation – and the decisions they made then had ongoing repercussions.

- Lives of the founding fathers of Federation: their motivations, and representations of their colonies.
- Major intercolonial issues prior to Federation.
- Steps to Federation: meetings and votes.
- Ceremony, Constitution, and first parliament.
- Consequences of their initial decisions.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Describe the personalities and motivations of the Founding Fathers of Federation.
- Outline the timeline of the Federation movement from early inspiration to the consequences.
- Account for some of the key issues in the Federation debate and their resolution
