To honour 125 years since Australia became a nation let’s investigate the people who made it happen, how it all evolved, and whether the process was a success. Among the issues that needed to be resolved was immigration restriction, trade policy and women’s participation – and the decisions they made then had ongoing repercussions.

• Major intercolonial issues prior to Federation.
• Steps to Federation: meetings and votes.
• Ceremony, Constitution, and first parliament.
• Consequences of their initial decisions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Describe the personalities and motivations of the Founding Fathers of Federation.
2. Outline the timeline of the Federation movement from early inspiration to the consequences.
3. Account for some of the key issues in the Federation debate and their resolution
