Print this page Breakaway - New State Movements in Australia
Available Classes
A look at breakaway 'New State' proposals across Australia. What prompted them, and which of them are still bubbling away today. What would the map of Australia look like if any or all of them had succeeded in seceding? When people think about secession and breakaway states, their mind usually turns to the American Civil War or to a disgruntled citizen who wants to set up their own state or principality. But Australia has a long history of New State proposals and of moves to break away from either the Commonwealth or from an individual State.
