Democracy promises representation, accountability and the rule of law, yet many people now feel those promises are fraying. This course takes a critical look at democracy from its Greek origins to the present, with particular attention to Australia and the United States.

You’ll examine institutions, checks and balances, separation of powers and the conditions that can give rise to illiberal democracy and populist authoritarian leaders. The course also asks whether Australia faces similar risks... and what, if anything, can be done to resist them.
