- An introduction to the ideas of leading thinkers, including Spinoza, Hobbes, Marx, Darwin, Freud and Nietzsche
- Religious replies to atheist arguments
- Reflection on the relevance of the ideas of secularism and religious toleration in today’s world
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Explain the significance of atheism in the development of modern thought
- Understand the key concepts of secularism and humanism
- Assess the strengths and weaknesses of atheist ideas and the religious response
