Slow down and discover the calming rhythm of crochet in this beginner-friendly course. Designed as both a creative practice and a form of mindfulness, sessions focus on learning at a gentle, unhurried pace. You’ll be introduced to essential stitches while exploring how repetition, rhythm and attention can quiet the mind and build confidence. The course emphasises understanding each movement, helping reduce overwhelm and improve retention. Ideal for complete beginners or those returning to crochet, this course offers a supportive environment to relax, learn and enjoy the simple satisfaction of making something by hand.

COURSE OUTLINE

Phase 1: Materials & Tools

  • Understanding yarn weights (cotton, wool, acrylic), identifying hook sizes, and using essential notions like stitch markers and tapestry needles.
  • The Fundamentals: Learning how to properly hold the crochet hook and yarn to manage tension.
  • Foundation Work: Mastering the slip knot and creating a consistent foundation chain.

Phase 2:  Core Stitches

  • Basic Stitches (US Terms): Step-by-step instruction on the primary building blocks of crochet: 
    Slip Stitch (sl st)
    Single Crochet (sc)
    Half Double Crochet (hdc)
    Double Crochet (dc)
  • Learn the diagrams, maths and design tips and tricks involved in understanding these stitches.

Phase 3: Intermediate Techniques

  • Edges: learn about the logic and mathematics for turning chains specific to each of the stitches to create rectangular or square shapes.
  • Colour Work: Techniques for changing yarn colours, different techniques depending on project
  • Finishing: learn to secure and strand yarn. Focus on finishing techniques and managing yarn tails.

Phase 4: Patterns & Granny Square 

  • Reading Patterns: Interpreting abbreviations, symbols, and diagrams found in crochet patterns , plus using these to make the granny Square.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Handle Materials: Confidently hold a crochet hook and yarn with proper posture and ergonomic "slow" movements.
  • Establish Foundations: Start any project by creating a slip knot and a foundation chain.
  • Execute Basic Stitches: Perform the Four foundational stitches—single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), and slip stitch.
  • Manage Tension: Control the "flow" of yarn to ensure your fabric is neither too stiff nor too loose, leading to even, consistent stitches.
  • Read Patterns: Interpret basic written patterns, abbreviations, and often visual stitch diagrams.
  • Finishing Techniques: Change yarn colours, fasten off securely, and weave in ends for a polished look.

COURSE RESOURCES

Students will be required to pay for a materials pack. This cost is $25 per person. This allows all students to use the same kind of yarn and the tutor can compare stitches and read your work easily. This will also help create a community of learning where we learn from each other’s work.
