Soul Music developed during the American Civil Rights Movement. It was born from Gospel and Blues. It developed distinctive styles from 1956 until the 1970s Disco Movement. Tonight, we will see and listen to great examples of Soul Music. We will sample Mototown, Stax Memphis, Philadelphia and New York types of Soul. Several iconic and memorable songs will be played from artists such as James Brown, Sam and Dave, Booker T and the MGs, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Taylor, Martha and the Vandellas and many more.

COURSE OUTLINE
- The origin of Soul in Gospel. The merging of Soul Music with Blues, the Devil’s Music.
- The development of Soul as Rhythm and Blues and Race Music during the 1950s.
- The emergence of Soul in Pop Music with Mototown, Stax Records in Memphis, the “Philly” sound and Southern Soul and New York Blues eyed soul.
- The development of Soul into modern R & B music and Hip Hop.

- Remember the music we grew up with and how it has affected the culture and lifestyle of the world.
- Discover how Soul led integration and Civil Rights as a soundtrack to push it forward.
- Learn some background of the famous artists and their hits and how Soul diversified in regional types.
- Explore the influence of the Soul Music on teen culture and the American Civil Rights Movement.
- Have a look at what these players contributed and how is has developed.
