Discover the art of formal debating. Learn persuasive speaking, argument, humour and critical thinking skills through hands-on debates and friendly competition.

Debating is both an intellectual challenge and great fun. This practical and interactive course introduces the principles and techniques of formal debate, including constructing arguments, persuasive speaking, rebuttal, teamwork and critical thinking. Participants will have the opportunity to debate topics both for and against their personal views, helping them better understand different perspectives and develop confidence in public speaking and argumentation. Through role play, workshops and friendly debates, you will also learn how debates are assessed and what makes an effective speaker and team. At the end of the course, participants will have the opportunity to join the WEA Debate Club and continue debating in future events. Suitable for beginners and anyone wanting to improve communication, confidence and critical thinking skills.
