Create a set of three delightful botanical art paintings, size A5. The subjects are provided. These are absolutely achievable with individual tuition and group step-by-step demonstrations. Learn to colour-match various subjects and create three dimensionality through form, shadow and composition. Learn the techniques of watercolour painting. All skill levels welcome.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Comprehensive class demonstration of watercolour techniques including colour matching and layering watercolour paint. Learn which sized brushes to use.
  • Discover the processes necessary to complete a botanical art painting and how to create depth. Explore composition and tonal balance.
  • The colour study is a significant process of colour matching the subject and applying the initial washes prior to the final painting.
  • There will be comprehensive class demonstrations and individual tuition.
  • Complete paintings with be discussed and appraised by the tutor and the end of the lesson. There will be one painting done per lesson.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Feel confident with colour matching, colour studies and working with washes to create colour intensity and luminosity.
  2. Create a balanced composition by spatial, tonal and colour balance.
  3. Use highlights and shadows to create solidity, form and three dimensionality.

MATERIALS LIST

  • Pencils: HB, 2B and 4B
  • Pencil sharpener
  • White plastic eraser; Grey kneadable eraser
  • Mask tape; Tissues; Ruler; Scissors
  • Watercolours: Cadmium Lemon – Winsor Lemon; Cadmium Yellow or Winsor Yellow; Permanent Rose; Cadmium Red or Winsor Red; French Ultramarine or Ultramarine; Paynes Grey or Sepia; Burnt Umber; Burnt Sienna (Bring all the colour you have. Winsor Cotman colours are less expensive and can be used as well as Winsor & Newton artists colours. Other brands are also suitable)
  • 4x A5 sheets Arches hot pressed (smooth) 300gsm watercolour paper (cut 2xA4 sheets in half)
  • Tracing paper or baking paper for transferring image to watercolour paper and also to protect work
  • 2x water containers (jars, large plastic containers)
  • Cotton material (eg facewashers) for drying brushes or absorbent kitchen cloth (eg Chux)
  • Brushes: Preferably Kolinsky round sable brushes size 3 and 5 . Bring other brushes you have. Some Imitation sable or synthetic brushes can be used. A nylon brush for mixing colours.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
