COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to the works of Italian animal painters Jacopo Bassano and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione
  • Apply acrylic gesso to 8 pages of watercolour paper
  • Study and draw examples of the comparative anatomy of humans and horses / donkeys; Apply varying ink washes to the dried gesso.
  • Copy a drawn oil sketch after the Italian painter Jacopo Tintoretto, to gain confidence in drawing with oil paint
  • Further study the muscle groups of the human figure
  • Study the anatomy of horses, donkeys, dogs, sheep, goats and chickens by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, drawn in oil paint.
  • Comparative animal anatomy excursion to the Australian Museum
  • Convert paintings / images of animals into drawings in oil paint
  • Analyse and create your own animal composition based on the compositional principles of animal painter Jacopo Bassano

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Use sanguine chalk pencil and oil paint as a drawing / sketching medium for drawing animals.
  2. Have gained the confidence and the ability, to compare and contrast the anatomy of the human figure with that of numerous other animals.
  3. Understand and apply compositional techniques to group drawings of animals.

MATERIALS LIST

  • Sepia ink
  • 2x Round watercolour brushes (size 6 and 8)
  • Size 5 oil painting brush (optional)
  • Large watercolour brush for washes
  • Burnt umber oil paint; Titanium white oil paint; Cobalt blue oil paint (optional)
  • Linseed oil
  • Acrylic gesso
  • Watercolour A3 or A4 sketchbook
  • Sanguine red chalk pencil
  • Stanely knife, eraser

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
