We examine Truman’s early challenges, his relationship with Allied leaders, and the emerging tensions with the Soviet Union. The course also considers his decision to use atomic weapons, one of the most debated moments in modern history.

• Crucial months of World War II leadership April - August 1945, surrender of Germany and German allies, Potsdam Conference July 1945, Manhattan Project, decision to use atomic weapons on Japan in August 1945
• Marshall Plan from 1948 and post war western European settlement, development of the Cold War and encroachment of Communist governments in eastern Europe, Berlin Airlifts 1948-1949
