This "Building Digital Skills" course is a free, supportive course designed specifically for beginners aged 50 and over to build confidence using everyday digital technology. Funded by a grant from the Good Things Foundation, this program helps older Australians develop their essential digital skills in a welcoming and practical learning environment. Over five sessions, you will learn how to connect with family and friends online, access important government and health services from home, and protect yourself from common online risks. Through hands-on learning and guided support, students gain the skills and confidence needed to use digital resources and technology more independently and comfortably.
This course is free for all participants aged 50+, making it an accessible opportunity to strengthen digital knowledge, stay connected, and feel more confident in today’s digital world. Every lesson is hands-on, practical and paced for learners who are new to technology or just looking to build more confidence.
No prior experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to learn.
Week 1: Introduction to the Digital World
- Students will take their very first steps into the digital world, building a foundational understanding of what technology is, why it matters in their everyday lives, and how to begin using it with confidence.
Week 2: Connecting with People You Love
- Students will discover how technology can bring them closer to the people who matter most, learning practical ways to stay in touch with family and friends no matter the distance.
Week 3: Staying Safe Online
- Students will develop the knowledge and awareness to navigate the internet safely and confidently, understanding how to protect themselves and their personal information in an increasingly digital world.
Week 4: Government Services at Your Fingertips
- Students will explore how to access essential everyday services from the comfort of their own home, saving time and gaining greater independence in managing their personal affairs online.
Week 5: Technology for Your Health & Everyday Life
- Students will discover how technology can enrich and simplify daily life, from managing their health information to exploring apps and tools that make everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
