Stretching from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, the Pan-American Highway is considered the longest “motorable road” in the world, despite a gap between Panama and Colombia known as the Darien Gap were the route is interrupted. This challenging network of roads covers roughly 19,000 miles (30,600 km) passing through fourteen different countries along the Americas, each one with diverse landscapes: mountains, dense jungles, coastal deserts, polar tundras and glaciers. The highway’s importance is reflected in intercontinental trade, connectivity and cultural exchange along the entire continent.

  • General aspects: main facts, length, where does it start and end, the Darien Gap, what is unique about it.
  • Traveling the Pan-American Highway: major cities along the highway, main routes and its highlights.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a general knowledge of the importance of the Highway and why it was constructed
  2. Discuss about the difficulties of the Darien Gap in Central America and why it is so difficult to cross
  3. Identify the most important cities along the network roads and which are their most important attributes and highlights
