The Napoleonic Wars, fought between 1803 and 1815, changed European and world history forever. Nation states were destroyed and created, monarchies came and went and the stage was set for the growth of a new order in Europe. It was a period that would set the pattern of modern warfare for over a century. This course explores Napoleon’s France as it evolved from a traditional European monarchy into an aggressive empire. Napoleon both inspired and horrified world leaders, writers, artists and composers. To some he was the saviour, to others the anti-Christ.
