For two hundred years, Beethoven’s music has spoken to us and moved us in ways no previous composer had ever achieved. Born at a pivotal point in European social and musical history, he took the conventions of the classical period and moulded them into the beginnings of Romanticism in music. This one-day course will tell the tragic and inspiring story of Beethoven’s life, richly illustrated with pictures, readings, and the music of this great composer.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Session 1: What do we think of when we think of Beethoven?, Beethoven’s Place in Music History, Europe in Beethoven’s time, Beethoven’s Musical Style, The Pathetique Sonata
  • Session 2: The First Period (1770-1802), The early symphonies and concertos, Moonlight Sonata, The Heiligenstadt Testament (1802)
  • Session 3: The Second Period (1802-1816), Symphonies Nos. 3 – 8, The Immortal Beloved Letter (1812), Fidelio
  • Session 4: The Third Period (1816-1827), The late piano sonatas, The late string quartets, The Diabelli Variations, Choral Symphony, "Ode to Joy"


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Describe elements of Beethoven musical style.
  2. List some of Beethoven’s major works, and describe their place in his musical output.
  3. Describe some of the major events of Beethoven’s life.
