Now that the candidates have been selected, we will survey the field, including independents and minor parties, and see how the race stands. Who do the polls say is ahead? Are there any dark horses who might cause an upset? We will look at some of the quirks in the US electoral system and how it works in practice. We will also look at some possible scenarios for the election and its aftermath.

  • The Presidential candidates, who they are, where they come from, what they stand for and their chances of winning
  • The role of the political parties in directing the election
  • The Presidential election process, including the Electoral College, the process for confirming the election result and how the result could be challenged

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Know the main candidates for US President, their political positions and likely supporter base
  2. Understand the election process for choosing the US President
