For the first time in over two decades the predominantly secularist Republican party, CHP, was the winner of the local elections in 2024 garnering around 37.74 percent of the votes. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP came second with 35.49 percent, and New Welfare Party, a new Islamist conservative party, was a surprise third with 6.19 percent.
