Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), and Robert Louis Stevenson, born the year after Poe died (1850-1894) were master writers, not just of one literary form, but of adventure, horror, historical, fantasy, poetry, plays, fiction and non-fiction, crafting each one with an enduring delight in language. Both forged new paths in literature – whether that was in horror, detective fiction, pirate stories, or historical adventures. Both had lives of heartbreak, romance, and travel. Both died young, rejoicing in minds of strength and agility, but burdened by addictions and illness, in bodies that could not keep up, leaving us with literature that endures.
