...The course is for any student wishing to learn the language for the purposes of reading and understanding the literature of an ancient culture. In addition, students may be interested in the linguistic elements of Latin that have formed the basis of many modern European languages. The language has also an historical interest for those exploring the development of modern institutions, including political, religious, social and philosophical thought.

COURSE OUTLINE
- Linguist background of the Latin language
- Introduction to the case system in nouns
- The present tense
- The concept of conjugations in verbs
- Prepositions: the use of some pronouns
- The form of adjectives
- Agreement of noun and adjective
- The irregular verb to be
- Introduction of numbers 1-10
- The foundation of Rome and the regal period
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Understand the uses of cases and the three Latin noun declensions;
- Recognise and translate the present tense of the four conjugations;
- Be familiar with all pronouns;
- Understand the structure of Latin sentences in different contexts;
- Translate simple Latin passages in the present tense;
- Have some acquaintance with periods of early Roman history.
LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY
If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
