Learn intermediate Italian through the films of Italy, from timeless classics to contemporary cinema, suitable for learners who have at least 250 hours of prior learning in Italian. Through guided viewing and targeted language activities, you will develop foundational intermediate level grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension, and spoken interaction in a clear and structured way to be able to express opinions and emotions, and communicate more confidently in everyday and cultural contexts. The course also offers insight into Italian culture and society, using cinema to explore social themes, regional perspectives, and historical change.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to language related to cinema and storytelling: Genres, plot, characters, opinions, ticket purchasing, cinema etiquette
  • Guided viewing of selected scenes from Italian films
  • Vocabulary development through film contexts: Everyday language, colloquial expressions, idioms
  • Grammar revision: Past tenses and narrative structures; Expressing opinions, preferences, and emotions; Hypotheses, advice, and reported speech; Complex sentence structures and connectors
  • Listening comprehension with authentic spoken Italian: Different accents, registers, and speaking speeds
  • Structured speaking activities and discussion: Film themes, characters, cultural topics, personal reactions
  • Cultural exploration through cinema: Italian history, social change, regional identity, and contemporary issues

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand and discuss key ideas from authentic Italian film scenes, expressing opinions and reactions with reasonable fluency at B1 level.
  2. Use a range of B1 level grammar structures and vocabulary accurately to describe events, narrate stories, and participate in conversations related to film and everyday topics.
  3. Demonstrate increased cultural awareness of Italy, recognising how language reflects social, historical, and cultural contexts presented through cinema.
