This course will systematically introduce you to all the main aspects of constructing, not only a likeness but the embodiment of someone's very personality. The tutor will introduce you to the drawing principles that go into constructing both a head and a portrait as well as the opportunity to apply the learnt skills of day one to two life models (female and male) portrait sitters.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Exercises in drawing the head as a mannequin: We will learn how to perceive of the head as an egg shape; The radial symmetry of the human head and most organisms; The proportional ratios of the head and face; The bony landmarks of the head and upper torso
  • Exercises in drawing hair, hands and the open mouth - these will be discussed within the context of art historical portraiture conventions
  • Portrait study from a female model - The morning session with the model will only address the drawing of the head.
  • Portrait study from a male model - The afternoon session will address the upper body, hands and the convention of the open mouth, to infer speech and breathing, in order to further animate the sitter.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a comprehensive introduction to the proportions of the human head.
  2. Perceive of the proportions of the head in terms of specific ratios and some foundational anatomy.
  3. Begin to apply art historical portraiture conventions to a drawing of an individual.

  • Small Stanley knife
  • A3 sketch book
  • Kneadable eraser
  • 2 bulldog clips
