Be introduced to a variety of drawing materials and the diverse ways they can be employed to convey form, tonality, atmosphere and texture. Materials studied will include black, sanguine red and white chalk pastel pencils, pen and ink, ink wash, gouache and variety of coloured ground papers. This class is suitable for both beginners and those with a background in drawing. As we will be developing upon fundamental drawing skills in all the exercises we undertake.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Rock studies – We will do a series of rock studies in charcoal, black chalk, pen and ink, ink wash and pen, ink wash and white gouache on coloured paper, as an introduction to various materials.
  • Drapery studies – Learn to make drapery studies in both pencil, pen and ink and ink wash.
  • Benjamin Robert Haydon – skull drawing – Learn how to draw and shade in black and white chalk on coloured paper. This exercise will then be applied to a medical human skull.
  • Trois crayon – Learn how to use three chalk pencils, in order to convey relative warm and cool values on a buff paper ground. Add water with a brush for bolder accents.
  • George Seurat - tonality and the recording of light and shade – make a copy of a Seurat drawing in black chalk, in order to understand light and the masses of tone.
  • Excursion to Hyde Park - tonality and the recording of light and shade – Apply George Seurat’s tonal drawing technique to the landscape.
  • Copying a Giovanni Francesco Castiglione monotype in white gouache on black or inked watercolour paper – This exercise will enable students to employ transparent and more opaque gouache to accurately convey lights role in conveying both form and tonality.
  • Theodore Gericault’s The Kiss – Learn to apply a combination of black chalk, ink wash and gouache to convey form, light and shadow.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Employ a variety of drawing materials both individually and in varying combinations with one another.
  2. Have gained and built upon drawing skills in proportion, conveying form and recording tone.
  3. Understand the drawing skills of historical artists and begin to be able to apply these to a current drawing practice.

MATERIALS LIST

Required for Week 1

  • 1x stick of willow charcoal
  • Oil based hard black chalk pastel pencil e.g. Faber Castell
  • Oil based soft black chalk pastel pencil e.g. Faber Castell
  • Indian ink
  • Calligraphy Pen & Ink Set With 5 Nibs
  • 2x brushes sizes 6 and 8
  • White gouache
  • 1x jam jar for water
  • 1x A2 sheet of blue-grey watercolour paper
  • 1x A3 sketch book

Required for Week 2 onwards

  • Oil based hard sanguine chalk pastel pencil e.g. Faber Castell
  • 1x A2 sheet of white watercolour paper
  • 1x A3 sheet of buff paper

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
