This practical course introduces participants to the expressive possibilities of mixed-media drawing through the timeless subject of floral still life. Working with materials including pen and ink, ink wash, black and coloured chalks, white gouache and other drawing media, participants will develop skills in observation, composition, texture and tonal rendering. Suitable for beginners and more experienced artists looking to expand their drawing techniques in a relaxed and supportive environment.

COURSE OUTLINE

Week 1 and 2

• After discussing the historical genre of Dutch still life flower painting, we will do a series of individual flower studies in black, red and white chalk, pen and ink, ink wash and white gouache on coloured paper, as an introduction to various materials.

Week 3

• Flower still life set up in black chalk, pen and ink and ink wash with teacher demonstration.

Week 4

• Still life in three chalks - sanguine red, black and white chalk with teacher demonstration.

Week 5

• Still life in pale ink wash, black and white chalk.

Week 6

• Still life in white gouache on inked paper with teacher demonstration.

Week 7

• Combined still life - students will each bring in flowers and collectively assemble a still life in groups to draw. This will enable a more complex study of historical still life composition.

Week 8 and 9

• Pen and ink still life with additional still life objects relatable to flowers e.g. fruit, insects and birds (photographed) etc

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

• Understand the genre of flower still life as it pertains both practically to drawing and to art history.
• Be able to employ multiple materials, both separately and in unison.
• Gain an understanding of how to both observe and describe, form, tone and lost and found edges in a drawing.

• Oil based hard black chalk pastel pencil e.g. Faber Castell PITT
• Oil based hard sanguine chalk pastel pencil e.g. Faber Castell PITT
• Indian ink
• Calligraphy Pen & Ink Set With 5 Nibs
• x2 brushes sizes 6 and 8
• White gouache
• x1 jar for water
• x2 A2 sheet of white watercolour paper
• x1 A3 sheet of buff paper
• x1 A3 sketch book
• Bring 2 flowers to the first class.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
