This course is an introduction to Chinese for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use with approximately 40 hours of Chinese required. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. This course aims to build general basic comprehension and communication skills in beginners Mandarin and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles.

• Etiquette of a polite guest/host
• Describe a visit to a friend's place
• Preposition zai (在), particles ba (吧), le (了)
• Adverb cai (才)

Unit 6

• Answer a phone call and initiate a phone conversation
• Set up an appointment with a teacher on the phone
• Ask a favor
• Ask someone to return your call
• Modal verbs yao (要), dei (得)
• Preposition gei (给), adverb bie (别),
• Directional complements
   

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
2. Learn basic etiquette to be a polite guest in China
3. Make a phone call to set up an appointment or to ask for help.
4. Read and write simple Chinese texts.
5. Narrate simple events
6. Demonstrate the skills, language and attitudes required for further study of Mandarin.
    

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
