This course is designed to introduce people to the Art of Calligraphy, its rich history and an understanding of the development of our Modern Alphabet. This module the focus will be on the Humanist Script of the Renaissance period and study the work of Italian calligrapher Palatino. We will start with gaining an understanding of working with a chisel shaped nib continuing to refine our calligraphic technique by focusing on letter construction, pen angles and spacial awareness.


Calligraphy Kit available for new students for $30 (not included in course fee)


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to writing with a chisel shaped nib by creating pen patterns/marks.
  • Introduction to the Humanist minuscule, its style, letter construction and characteristics.
  • Letter form and spacing and further refine skills.
  • Humanist Capitals and their origins and combine them with the lower case script.
  • Learn how to make a simple book in which to display the produced work.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Write with a chisel shaped nib
  2. Construct letters of the Humanist script
  3. Achieve spacial awareness
  4. Achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape
  5. Achieve an understanding of layout and design skills
  6. Apply colour and design techniques
  7. Apply all learned skills into a book.


MATERIALS LIST

  • A4 or A3 bond layout pad – Canson or similar brand from Art stores
  • Chisel shaped nibs such Brause, Speedball, William Mitchell – large, medium and small size.
  • Pen holder
  • Ink- Black Sumi ink or Chinese stick ink
  • Gouache – a few different colours – black + a primary colour set.
  • Ruler, pencil HB
  • Water jar, rag.
  • Other supplies will be advised if needed throughout the course.


IMPORTANT: Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
