Ancient Greek Beginners 1 - F2F

For those who have no prior knowledge of Ancient Greek. After mastering the alphabet of this exciting language, read passages in Greek abridged from original sources, providing an insight into the culture. Through reading we cover essential grammar and build vocabulary. Be amazed at how even a little background in Greek provides an understanding of the complexities of both our own and other languages.

This class will be delivered face-to-face at WEA Sydney. Enrolling students need to ensure they have read the current COVID-19 Safety Guidance that WEA Sydney has put in place before enrolling.

  • Athenaze, An Introduction to Ancient Greek, Book I (3rd edition), Maurice Balme & Gilbert Lawall revised by James Morwood, Oxford University Press

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Mastering the alphabet.
  • Basic Grammar Topics and questions of syntax introduced through graded reading.
  • Case.
  • Gender.
  • Nouns - introduction to declensions focusing on 2nd declension,
  • Definite articles and adjectives.
  • Verbs - conjugation of regular and important irregular verbs In present tense.
  • Adverbs.

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a full familiarity with the Greek alphabet.
  2. Read and understand simple passages abridged from Classical Greek writers.
  3. Acquire the skills for learning an inflected language.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
