What is the significance of the failed coup in July 2016 and the subsequent purge by President Erdoğan? Is this the end of secularism in Turkey? We will explore these current issues and take a deeper look at the past history of Turkish society and politics.

COURSE OUTLINE
* Origin of the Turks. The Ottoman Empire. Emergence of Turkish Nationalism.

Turkish nationalism, Republic of Turkey and Mustafa Kemal (founder of the Turkish Republic). Secularism and the Turkish Republic after Mustafa Kemal.
Post World War Politics. Islam in the political arena.
Minorities in Turkey.
The Kurdish question. The Alevi question.
Current issues: Turkey and the European Union. Conflict between the secularist and the Islamists. Intra-Islamist conflict and the purge.

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this course, students should be able to:

Provide a brief outline of the history of modern Turkey.
Discuss the politics of Turkey in the 20th and 21st Century century.
Identify the major issues that confront Turkey today.
