This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct individual and small group work skill instruction using existing support materials and demonstration of work skills as a training strategy; and assess the success of training and one’s own training performance. It focuses on the training being driven by the work process and context. The unit applies to a person working under supervision as a work skill instructor in a wide range of settings not restricted to training organisations. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. All assignments are completed online making it easy and portable to keep track of where you are up to.

  • Students will be paying this course in two payments, one with an initial fee of $200 on enrolment, with a marking fee of $75 to be paid when the assessor has finished marking your unit.
  • This unit must be completed within 3 months. Extensions (1 month - $50, 3 month - $150, 6 month - $350) can be purchased through the office upon request.
  • All students have 90 days to submit the required documentation on enrolment or WEA Sydney reserves the right to cancel their enrolment.
  • Access to our online learning platform will be issued once we have received and verified all your supporting documentation and USI number.

Course entry requirements

Those entering this program must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience. Effective language, literacy and numeracy skills to plan, research and write a range of documentation and present information as well as access to a computer and internet is also required. Please notify us during the enrolment process of any additional learning needs to maximise your potential. Please ensure that you have read the WEA Sydney Student Handbook before enrolling.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Organise instruction and demonstration

  • Gather information about learner characteristics and learning needs
  • Confirm a safe learning environment
  • Prepare simple session plan for work skill instruction and demonstration objectives
  • Access and review support materials for their suitability and relevance
  • Organise access to physical support material required for instruction and demonstration
  • Notify learners of planned work skill instruction

Conduct instruction and demonstration

  • Interact with learners to establish a safe and comfortable learning environment
  • Brief learners on work health and safety (WHS) procedures and requirements prior to, and during, training
  • Follow plan for work skill instruction and cover all learning objectives
  • Use facilitation techniques to structure, pace and enhance learning, and explain and demonstrate work skills
  • Apply coaching techniques to assist learning
  • Use communication techniques to provide information, engage and instruct learners and demonstrate work skills
  • Monitor professional relationship with learner, and adjust to suit learner needs
  • Provide opportunities for learners to practise the work skill

Check training performance

  • Use observation and questioning to check learner acquisition and use of new skills and knowledge
  • Provide feedback on learner performance to support learning
  • Monitor learner progress and outcomes in consultation with the learner

Review training performance

  • Gather feedback from learners on work skill instruction according to organisational procedures
  • Reflect on own practice in providing instruction and demonstration, and identify strategies for improvement
  • Maintain, store and secure learner records, according to organisational and legal requirements

No, this is a competency-based course. You will need to show that you understand and are able to implement the learning you have received and will be required to competently complete assessment tasks for all units of learning.
