This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design, develop and document assessment tools used for the collection of quality evidence for the competency-based assessment of nationally recognised training products, including assessment tools for recognition of prior learning. The unit applies to experienced vocational education and training (VET) assessors and assessment resource developers who develop assessment tools that meet VET regulatory requirements. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. All assignments are completed online making it easy and portable to keep track of where you are up to.

  • Students will be paying this course in two payments, one with an initial fee of $200 on enrolment, with a marking fee of $75 to be paid when the assessor has finished marking your unit.
  • This unit must be completed within 3 months. Extensions (1 month - $50, 3 month - $150, 6 month - $350) can be purchased through the office upon request.
  • All students have 90 days to submit the required documentation on enrolment or WEA Sydney reserves the right to cancel their enrolment.
  • Access to our online learning platform will be issued once we have received and verified all your supporting documentation and USI number.

Course entry requirements

Those entering this program must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience. Effective language, literacy and numeracy skills to plan, research and write a range of documentation and present information as well as access to a computer and internet is also required. Please notify us during the enrolment process of any additional learning needs to maximise your potential. Please ensure that you have read the WEA Sydney Student Handbook before enrolling.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Prepare to develop assessment tool

  • Clarify tool purpose, target group and context of assessment
  • Analyse target group characteristics and identify their needs relevant to assessment tool design and development
  • Access and analyse nationally recognised units of competency to identify what is required to demonstrate competence
  • Analyse available assessment instruments for their suitability for use, and identify required modifications

Plan assessment tool

  • Review own skills and knowledge required to develop the assessment tool and identify gaps in subject matter expertise, industry relevance and industry currency
  • Address identified gaps according to organisational procedures
  • Determine steps and estimate time needed for the design and development of assessment tool

Design assessment tool

  • Review and select assessment methods appropriate to purpose, target group, required evidence collection and assessment context
  • Check and confirm that combination of assessment methods meets unit of competency requirements and supports principles of assessment and rules of evidence
  • Identify instruments required to collect evidence using selected assessment methods and according to organisational requirements

Develop assessment tool

  • Record the context and conditions for assessment
  • Develop tasks to be administered to candidates
  • Develop outline of evidence to be gathered from candidate
  • Develop instruments to be used to collect evidence from candidate in line with universal design principles and according to legislative and regulatory requirements
  • Develop criteria to be used to make judgements about whether competence has been achieved
  • Develop administration, recording and reporting requirements
  • Develop instructions for assessor and for candidate
  • Map assessment tool to the nationally recognised training product
  • Document draft assessment tool according to organisational procedures

Finalise assessment tool

  • Undertake a systematic review of the assessment tool according to organisational procedures
  • Trial assessment tool to validate its content and applicability
  • Collect and document feedback on assessment tool and amend tool as required
  • Finalise and store assessment tool according to organisational procedures

Will you need to sit for any exams?

No, this is a competency-based course. You will need to show that you understand and are able to implement the learning you have received and will be required to competently complete assessment tasks for all units of learning.
