This course is an introduction to Russian for any student wishing to learn the language for business, pleasure, travel or everyday use. No prior knowledge of Russian is required. The communicative “natural” teaching approach of this course emphasises speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Everyday topics will be presented to allow students to begin communicating in Russian from the very start. This course will also serve as an introduction to Russian life, society and culture.

- Tutor supplied material from Troika: A Communicative Approach to Russian Language, Life and Culture, Marita Nummikoski as well as additional materials developed by the tutor, will be provided to students in class.
COURSE OUTLINE
- Introduction to the Russian alphabet and pronunciation
- Introducing oneself, Getting to know others, Greeting people, Asking yes-or-no questions
- Describing people with adjectives of nationality and quality, Asking someone’s name and nationality, Enquiring about someone’s profession, Naming one’s profession
- Introducing family members and friends, Talking about one’s family, Counting in Russian, Giving one’s phone number
- Ordering a meal, Saying what one likes and doesn’t like, Naming things, Describing things with adjectives
- Asking for and expressing opinions, Talking about possessions, Asking for items in a shop or market, Times of day, Days of the week
- Describing one’s city, Asking for directions, Expressing location
- Describing things in the plural, Describing one’s house or apartment, Describing one’s country
- Making comparisons, Telling time, Talking about daily activities
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Read and write Cyrillic alphabet.
- Introduce and talk about oneself in Russian and exchange basic conversation with others.
- Develop basic knowledge of Russian life, society and culture and a greater knowledge and appreciation of the Russian-language speaking world.
- Develop the language and general learning skills required for further study of Russian.
