In this course you learn the basic skills to understand, read, write and speak everyday Portuguese language, grammar and culture for when you travel or go on a business trip. You will also learn basic pronunciation differences between Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese.

  • Introducing oneself and others
  • Professions, countries and nationalities

2 - Onde fica o hotel?

  • Describing and locating places
  • Asking for directions
  • Booking accomodation
  • Asking the time

3 - Queria uma bica por favor

  • Asking to be served and and menus
  • Going shopping
  • Going to the post-office, the bank and the stationery shop
  • Describing everyday situations in the present
  • Expressing preferences
  • Numbers 20-100

Grammar

  • Verbs ser, ter e estar, chamar-se, haver in the present indicative
  • The alphabet, sounds and pronunciation
  • Articles and personal pronouns (singular and plural)
  • The plural and gender in Portuguese
  • The possessives and Interrogatives
  • Verbs ending in ar, er, ir in the present indicative
  • Verb: estar a + infinitive

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Use basic Portuguese effectively for practical communication and reading comprehension, in either a business or social setting.
  2. Demonstrate the skills, language and attitudes required for further study.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
