This is a continuation course for students who have completed the WEA Portuguese Conversation and Grammar 1, 2 or 3, or for those with intermediate/advanced language skills who wish to improve their fluency of the Portuguese language. Students will have the opportunity to focus on specific skills, such as participating in more developed oral and listening exercises, extending vocabulary in given areas, improving written language, and developing a better understanding of specific cultural and social issues. The course uses group discussions and individual presentations by the students on various topics (culture, society, environment, literature, etc) to build on the competencies achieved in previous levels. It is assumed that students will have 150 + hours of prior learning, or equivalent.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Understanding and discussing news and commentary in the media
  • Oral comprehension of texts in the areas of, social issues, travelling, gastronomy, recreation, arts and culture and everyday living.
  • Understanding the meaning of Portuguese idiomatic expressions (cont’d)
  • Knowing Portuguese customs, traditions and products, Imperative (revision)
  • The Subjunctive – Present, Imperfect, Future and compound tenses, Verbs conjugated with object pronouns (cont’d)
  • Adverbs, Homophones, Homographs, paronyms, homonyms, The Personal Infinitive and the Future Subjunctive
  • Indicative tenses – (revision), Prepositions – (revision)

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Increase skills to use the Portuguese language in a more developed fluency and in most social contexts.
  2. Increase their ability and skills in the areas of listening, writing, speaking and reading, required for continued study of Portuguese
  3. Acquire knowledge and understanding of further Portuguese lexicon
  4. Develop practical skills and understanding of Portuguese grammar.
