Modern Greek spoken in Greece, Cyprus and the Diaspora across the world has remarkable continuity with its ancient counterpart, but it has changed significantly in morphology and syntax. Yet, the alphabet remained the same. This course will introduce students to the Greek alphabet and basic expressions, which would be useful when visiting Greece or Cyprus. Cultural nuances will also be explored. By the end of the course students will be able to identify the Greek letters and recognise basic expressions in Greek newspapers (such as the weather, for instance).
