The course is an introduction to Japanese for any students wishing to learn the language for business, travel and/or everyday use. Students will develop basic skills of conversation, reading, listening and writing in Japanese.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Basic Japanese writing systems: Hiragana, Katakana and some daily-life kanji
  • Basic classroom expressions (imasu, -te kudasai etc.)
  • Introducing yourself: countries, languages, occupations, and family
  • Recognise the parts of a business card
  • Telling your abilities (N ga dekimasu)
  • Telling your residence (N ni sundeimasu)
  • Basic copula sentence structure (A wa B desu)
  • Numbers and counting system (age & people)
  • Talking about foods and drinks
  • Talking about likes and dislikes (N ga suki desu)
  • Basic sentence structure (object particle + basic verbs)
  • Frequency adverbs (Itsumo, yoku, amari)
  • Adjectives and the conjugations

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  2. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  3. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
