Italian Book Club (B2-C1)

This course provides advanced learners with the opportunity to engage in authentic language while exploring classic and modern Italian authors, such as Alessandro Baricco, Gianrico Carofiglio, Leonardo Sciascia, Oriana Fallaci. Selected chapters from books by Italian authors will be read and analyzed in small and large groups in order to gain a deeper understanding of the texts. The book club will create multiple opportunities for participants to interact with each other and share ideas and opinions. The cultural and historical context of each book will be also analyzed, deepening participant’s knowledge of the Italian culture, society and history.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Writer and book introduction
  • Reading and groups discussion of selected chapters from books by classic and modern Italian authors. The first book will be Le otto montagne, Paolo Cognetti, winner in 2017 of the "Strega" prize (one of Italy's top literary awards).
  • Analysis and interpretation of the texts
  • Analysis of the cultural and historical context
  • Vocabulary activities

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  2. Participate in a discussion, interact with peers and share opinions and ideas.
  3. Talk about complex subjects using a wide lexicon.
  4. Gain a deeper knowledge of the Italian literature, culture and history.
