Calligraphy for Beginners: 14th Century Renassaince Gothic

This course is designed to introduce people to the Art of Calligraphy, its rich history and an understanding of the development of our Modern Alphabet. This module the focus will be on a historical 14th Century Renaissance Gothic script and its origins. This lovely script is based on an early Renaissance manuscript of the 1300’s. We will start with gaining an understanding of working with a chisel shaped nib continuing to refine our calligraphic technique by focusing on letter construction, pen angles and spacial awareness. The study of Filgree Versals to compliment the text. This course is designed for beginners- intermediate students.

COURSE OUTLINE

Calligraphy Kit available for new students for $30 (not included in course fee)

  • Introduction to writing with a chisel shaped nib by creating strokes that we use to construct the script.
  • Introduction to the Italian Gothic Script, its style, letter construction and characteristics.
  • We will continue to study letter form and spacing and further refine our skills.
  • We will study the history of this period and the applications of these hands in manuscripts and documents.
  • Introduction to Filigree Versals and their decoration

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Write with a chisel shaped nib
  2. Construct letters of the hand
  3. Achieve spacial awareness
  4. Achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape
  5. Achieve an understanding of period documents/manuscripts
  6. Achieve a knowledge and be able to draw versals and their period decoration.

MATERIALS LIST

  • Zig or Staedtler Calli Duo texta pen for those with no experience.
  • Calligraphy nibs – Speedball #2 & 3 or Brause nibs 2mm & 3mm
  • Sumi Ink or gouache – black and other colours you may wish to work with
  • A4 bond layout pad.
  • Water jar
  • Pencil, ruler



IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
