Also known as amigurumi, crocheting toys is not only extremely enjoyable and satisfying to do but it’s also a creative way of making gifts for loved ones. From animals and fantastical creatures, to characters from films and TV, anything is possible in the world of amigurumi. Catered to beginners in crochet, this course will take students through the basics of making their own plush toys and equip them with the skills necessary for this fun but simple craft.


  • Face-to-Face


  • How to make and implement the magic loop
  • Learning the basic crochet stitches used to make a toy, including how to increase and decrease
  • How to evenly stuff a project
  • Closing holes and darning in ends as seamlessly as possible
  • How to sew on additional pieces (e.g. arms and legs)
  • Embroidering facial features
  • Reading a basic amigurumi pattern
  • Crocheting a basic amigurumi toy


By the end of this course students should be able to:

  1. Read and follow a simple amigurumi pattern
  2. Crochet a beginner’s-level amigurumi toy
  3. Implement the basic crochet stitches used in amigurumi, as well as know how to increase and decrease


  • 1x 100g ball of yarn in 10ply or thicker (any colour is fine) and in either acrylic or cotton (avoid expensive yarns, e.g. wool)
  • 1x crochet hook in a size smaller than the recommended size on the label of the chosen yarn
  • 1x darning needle
  • A small amount of stuffing

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
