Catered to absolute beginners and beginners in crochet, this four-hour course will take students through the basics of amigurumi (the Japanese art of crocheting toys) and equip them with the skills required for this fun but simple craft. Students will begin by learning how to make the ever-popular magic loop, followed by working in a continuous round, as well as some simple increasing and decreasing stitches to shape their toy. They will also discover the art of evenly stuffing amigurumi projects (the stuffing will be provided by the tutor) and some quick and easy sewing techniques.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • How to make and use the magic loop to start an amigurumi project
  • Learning the basic crochet stitches used to make any amigurumi toy, as well as how to increase and decrease
  • How to evenly stuff a project
  • Neatly closing holes and making them almost invisible, as well as darning in ends
  • Reading a basic amigurumi pattern
  • Crocheting a basic amigurumi toy

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and follow a simple amigurumi pattern
  2. Crochet a beginner’s-level amigurumi toy
  3. Implement the basic crochet stitches used in amigurumi, as well as know how to increase and decrease

MATERIALS LIST

  • 1x 50g ball of yarn in 10ply or thicker (any colour is fine). Yarn is stocked at Spotlight, Lincraft, Big W, Kmart, Riot Art & Craft
  • 1x crochet hook in a size or half size smaller than the recommended size on the label of the chosen yarn
  • 1x paper clip or safety pin
  • 1x darning needle

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
