Archaeoastronomy explores how people studied astronomy from different perspectives, cultures and religions. There are countless relics (arts, objects, constructions) that reflect how people from different countries have understood the sky and its celestial objects. Archaeoastronomy preserves ancient astronomical knowledge of tribal, aboriginal, or extinct cultures.

  • Introduction to Archeoastronomy and early cosmologies
  • Astronomy in Babylon and Egypt
  • Greek contributions to astronomy and their lasting influence
  • Astronomy across Asia, Africa, and Arabia
  • Ancient astronomical practices in the Western Hemisphere

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand early cosmological views and the role of ancient structures as astronomical calendars.
  2. Describe the astronomical practices of ancient Babylon, Egypt, and Greece.
  3. Recognise the diversity of astronomical traditions across Asia, Arabia, Africa, and the Americas.
  4. Appreciate how ancient knowledge informs modern understanding of the cosmos.
