The Battle of El Alamein was the first major defeat of Axis forces in WW2 and began the rout of the Afrika Korps from North Africa. A major set-piece battle by British Commonwealth forces, it stopped the German advance on the Suez and led to the invasion of Sicily and Italy by Allied forces. Australia’s 9th Division played a major role in the action, pushing the Germans westward along the coast and allowing the other Allied forces to push through. But it was a costly and bloody affair. We look at the overall battle and Australia’s role in it.
