Learning Russian language through poems and songs is highly instrumental as it helps to improve pronunciation and understand cultural realities. Boost your comprehension, creativity, imagination and communication skills. Close poetry reading develops students’ cultural understanding and deep understanding of the language. A special set of poems are chosen for students with basic knowledge of the Russian language to read and enjoy them. Among these are folk songs, poems for children and works by well-known Russian poets experimenting with language.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Russian Nursery Rhymes, folk songs and poems for kids - Listening and watching video presentations of the poems; Careful reading of the poems with attention to the meanings, grammar and pronunciation; Practicing reading the poems aloud; Vocabulary: family members, everyday objects, seasons, nature; Basic grammar: examples of declination and conjugation; Translating poems into English.
  • Experimental poetry - History of Russian experimental poetry; Avant-guard and tradition in Russian contemporary experimental poetry; Visual poems, combinatorics poems, word-play poems, video poems; Careful reading of the poems with attention to the meanings, grammar and pronunciation; Wordplay and tricks with words in experimental poetry; Practicing reading the poems aloud.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Get acquainted with the basics of Russian culture.
  2. Read short poems of various genres and types.
  3. Build Russian vocabulary, grammar and confident pronunciation.
  4. Understand grammar structures of sentences and declination and conjugation of the Russian words.
  5. Understand social and historical contexts of the poems.
  6. Get acquainted with rhymes, poetic metre and word play in Russian poetry.
