“Handel is the greatest, ablest composer that ever lived” said Beethoven of the composer best-known for his choral music. In his own time Handel was known as a German who wrote Italian operas for English audiences. This music appreciation course examines the whole range of Handel’s music, as well as the highs and lows of his life and career.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Session 1: Introduction, What do we think of when we think of Handel?, Handel’s place in history, Historical and social background: The Baroque period, Some characteristics of Baroque music, Handel’s musical style
  • Session 2: 1605-1696: The Early Years, 1696-1705: Germany, 1705-1714: Italy and travelling, Rinaldo
  • Session 3: 1714-1730: Handel in London, Operas and the Royal Academy of Music, The Water Music, Julius Caesar, Alexander’s Feast, The Coronation Anthems, including Zadok the Priest
  • Session 4: 1730-1759: Handel in London continued, Handel’s oratorios, Deborah, Messiah, Music for the Royal Fireworks

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Describe elements of Handel’s musical style
  2. List some of Handel’s major works, and describe their place in his musical output
  3. Describe some of the major events of Handel’s life
