Natural Light Portraiture

Natural light is by far the most exquisite light for creating portraiture. Emphasize different aspects of your subject by learning how to control and manipulate the quality and direction of the environmental light. Create evocative portraits using both indoor and outdoor natural light sources. Improve your methods of exposure, focus and composition. Experiment with different picture style colours and effects. This course is designed for students who have completed the Introduction to Your Digital Camera course or who are confident in using their camera in manual exposure or aperture priority exposure mode.

Students will need to bring the following to class – Digital SLR camera, A1 card in white, gold or silver OR a photographic reflector if you have one already. Tripod recommended.

  • Camera orientation
  • Light quality / directions
  • 3 point lighting
  • Light manipulation with reflectors
  • Exposure, metering and focus methods
  • Composition
  • Practical application in class.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Assess the light quality & identify the key lighting direction.
  2. Learn to manipulate the available environmental light and/or exposure for optimum quality.
  3. Recognise & emphasise different aspects of your subject revealed by light.
