Pam's first qualification in engineering (BE Hon) led her to a long career in TAFE as a teacher and curriculum developer, but after retiring early, she retrained in archaeology (BA Hon) and has enjoyed digitally recording heritage inscription at the North Head Quarantine Station and on Norfolk Island, participating in excavations and surveys of maritime sites such as shipwrecks, wharves, boatyards, pleasure grounds, watermills, and convict workstations as well as terrestrial sites ranging from colonial homesteads to Roman forts. As well as continuing involvement in maritime heritage investigations, she now combines her technical, teaching and archaeological skills volunteering at the Australian National Maritime Museum as a guide and speaker. Her presentations invite students to step into the past not just through historical accounts but through the artefacts, sites and landscapes left behind. What do they tell that history leaves out? How can modern technologies let us access those stories?
