Toledo was the capital of Spain until 1561, and the move to Madrid protected many of the city’s mediaeval buildings and narrow streets from ugly redevelopment. Today the city is only 28 minutes from Madrid by high-speed train, but because Toledo is the end of the line, many tourists bypass the city to go south or east to the more- visited cities of Barcelona, Seville, Granada, Cordoba and Malaga.
